BUILT: 1902 in Martenstoock Holland
CONSTRUCTION: German Blue Steel with Oregon timber overlaid decks.
AN INCREDIBLE HISTORY: Built in 1902 in the Netherlands of German steel with timber decking and superstructure as a sail powered cargo vessel. Solway Lass was originally named Stina. In 1905 she was sold and renamed "Adolf" working in and around the Baltic and North Sea. In 1915 Solway Lass was seized as a prize of war by the British and used as a Q-Ship during WWI. Q-Ships, with their shallow hull were used as decoys to bring submarines to the surface, when the Subs surfaced guns on the deck of Solway Lass would give the Subs 'what for'.
At end of WWI, Solway Lass worked as a coal merchant, produce and stone carrying vessel between Liverpool, England and Scottish Ports.
In 1924 she was sold to a Scottish firm in the Solway Firth where she was renamed "Solway Lass".
When WWII broke out the Germans seized Solway Lass as a prize of war where she was used to supply their armed forces. During the war Solway Lass hit a mine and was badly damaged, however the Germans refloated and repaired her because she was useful as a sail-powered icebreaker.
After WWII Solway Lass served in the South Pacific as a cargo vessel, however in the early 1980s new faster cargo vessels left her outdated and as a result she fell into disrepair. In 1983 a businessman, Tim Lloyd, purchased Solway Lass in Fiji and had her sailed to Sydney. For two years she was totally rebuilt and in 1988 took pride of place in the 1st Fleet re-enactment of the 1788 Tallships into Sydney Harbour.
WHITSUNDAY CHARTERS: Early 1999 Solway Lass was remodelled for a 3 day/3 night sailing Whitsunday Islands cruise. Solway Lass is AIR CONDITIONED and has 11 cabins for 32 guests. These cabins are private double/twin and share, and feature teak and cedar feature walls along with Jarrah timber trims. Solway Lass also has a bar area serving icy cold drinks and an outdoor dining room which boasts the most beautiful Whitsunday views. Solway Lass provides guests with the opportunity to experience sailing as it was 100 years ago with the 10 sails and 5500 square feet of sail area.
