On 9 June, 1946 a ceremonial cairn was unveiled on Day Dream Island, off the Queensland coast, to commemorate the discovery and naming of the Whitsunday Passage by Captain James Cook on 3 June, 1770.

A little on Cook
In 1768 Lieutenant James Cook, RN, set sail in HM Bark Endeavour on a voyage of exploration and scientific investigation. After observing the transit of Venus across the sun at Otaheite in the Pacific, Cook sailed south-west to disprove or otherwise the existence of a "Great South Land'. By 1770 he had reached New Zealand.
