The Paddling Through History Festival commences at Airlie Beach and pays tribute to over 6000 years of maritime and cultural history in the region, with a four-day canoe and outrigger festival that travels around the Whitsunday Islands, following traditional routes taken by the Ngaro people.

The festival was first staged in 2000 and is a joint effort of local tourism bodies, national parks, the indigenous community and local sporting groups to celebrate the maritime and cultural history of the Whitsundays.
